Summary:

In the past, the Humboldt penguin colonies in Peru have been greatly impacted by guano extraction campaigns. Throughout the years different mitigation strategies have been developed to minimize the effect on this species´ population. In Punta San Juan, the largest Humboldt penguin colony in Peru, the guano extraction is carried out at a minimum distance from the breeding grounds and moveable visual barriers are used to try and reduce the possible visual contact between penguins and the workers. Even so, the Humboldt penguin is highly sensitive to disturbances, considered to be the shyest of all penguin species. For example, this species has been found to be disturbed by visual stimuli up to 50 meters away and nest desertion has been associated with exposure to constant human presence. To date no investigation has been carried out into the efficiency of the mitigation strategies applied. This study aims to evaluate whether the distance from the guano extraction zone to the Humboldt penguin reproductive colony affected the number of active nests in Punta San Juan during the 2019 campaign. The minimum distances between the guano extraction areas in the 2019 campaign and the sections of Punta San Juan’s largest Humboldt penguin colony will be estimated. Subsequently, the effect of these minimum distances on the number of active nests will be modeled. The results of this investigation will help understand the efficiency of the mitigation strategies applied at Punta San Juan and promote their use in other guano extraction sites in Peru.
