Dr. Rosana Paredes has a bachelor’s degree and Professional tittle in Biology from Cayetano Heredia University (1988/1989); and a doctorate in behavioral ecology from Memorial University, Canada (2008). She was a postdoc at Oregon State University (2008-2012) after which she was granted an Affiliate Research Faculty position. She is also Principal Investigator of Pacific Rim Biological as an independent consultant, and Senior Seabird biologist at Stantec, Canada. Punta San Juan is the cornerstone of Dr. Paredes’ career as a research biologist, assisting with Dr. Majluf’s fur seal research from 1990 until 1996. At the same time, Rosana did her licentiate research on Peruvian gulls, from which she got her nickname (‘Gaviota”), and later initiated Humboldt penguins’ studies until 1999. Dr. Paredes has led multiple seabird research projects, in collaboration and partnerships with Indigenous communities, academic institutions, and government and non-profit organizations in Canada, Alaska and Peru. Her research uses biologging, physiology, surveys, observations, monitoring, and artificial mitigation techniques to increase our understanding of ecosystem functioning, promote the sustainable use of resources and the conservation of marine environments. Since 2013, Dr. Paredes has been actively working with the Punta San Juan researchers conducting biologging studies and building local capacity.
