Field Coordinator
Daniel Torres Castillo is a Biologist from the Jorge Basadre Grohmann National University in Tacna, is a PADI Divemaster, is an RPAS (drone) pilot and has experience in capturing, containing, handling and releasing marine birds and mammals. His long term goal is to work in management for nature conservation of marine ecosystems using scientific information as his base criteria. Daniel, arrived at the Punta San Juan Program in 2016 as a volunteer, was a thesis student and worked as Field Assistant. Since October 2020 he is the Field Coordinator and amongst his duties are the operational logistics involved in field work and scientific research. He also conducts wildlife monitoring and leads the collection of routine biological sampling in PSJ. He teaches interns and volunteers about fieldwork and how information is collected and contributes towards the improvement of their research proposals. Together with the team of the Punta San Juan Program, he is involved in the planning and design of research, conservation and environmental education activities. He works day to day with the staff of SERNANP and AGRORURAL to support and fulfill the objectives of the protected natural area. Currently, Daniel is working on his master's studies with a research focus on Guanay cormorants, on which he will deploy small video cameras and GPS that will allow to measure the level of encounters and interaction with the commercial anchovy fishing fleet in northern Peru.
